Tourist tales

I thought I should fill in you people "from away" on how you come across to the natives here. And perhaps the best way is with a few stories.

The first has to do with the picture below. It shows the town of Bar Harbor and an island called Bar Island. There is a trail that can be driven that connects the island to the mainland that is only available for 90 minutes at low tide. So far this summer, three cars have been flooded by trying to drive across when there is water. I saw one in the paper two days ago! How dumb are tourists?

Next is the story of a man "from away" who was staying in Northeast Harbor. One morning he called the police to report vandalism on his car overnight. The police came and reviewed the situation and then explained to the man about seagulls and the mess they can make. Really? The guy couldn't tell birds had crapped on his car? This story was also in the paper. Seems the locals don't have a problem laughing at the tourists.

Also, in general the natives aren't too impressed with people from Massachusetts. They have an interesting nickname for them - Massholes. Good for a chuckle.

  1. Massholes eh? Mainiacs are fairly bad drivers from what i've seen doing donuts out in those potato fields. As far as the guy who reported vadalism to his car from bird doo, he must have been from New York :)
